Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) is a rare digestive disorder that occurs when the third portion of the small intestine (the duodenum) becomes compressed between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery. This compression blocks the normal passage of food, leading to symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, early fullness, and significant weight loss. In severe cases, people may become unable to eat enough to maintain proper nutrition and may require feeding tubes or intravenous nutrition (TPN). Because SMAS is rare and its symptoms often resemble other gastrointestinal conditions, diagnosis can be difficult and delayed. Early recognition and appropriate treatment are essential to prevent malnutrition and improve quality of life.
